Just say NO to vertical videos

Just say NO to vertical videos
Nino Leitner

This is an issue I have come across MANY times with amateur shooters who are mainly using their phones to shoot video – they shoot vertical videos and don’t even realize that it’s utterly stupid.

Vertical videos make absolutely no sense for a lot of reasons, and I want to smack the phones out of people’s hands whenever I see someone doing it. That’s for photos only!!!

Anyway, these guys made a hilarious video about it and I thought it’s too important not to share with you guys … check this out and spread the word 🙂

  1. That was fun 😀

However, categoriacally saying ‘no, it’s wrong’ is one of the reasons there is so much homophobia, racism, ignorance and other narrowmindedness. Everything has a purpose.
http://vimeo.com/11238720 check out Jesse’s vertical video…it’s awesome and much better vertical. Most of us are now consuming video on handheld devices and for them its just fine 🙂

    Cheers,

    • Oh come on … it’s a little bit of fun, nothing more. That’s simply a killer argument that could be applied to any “rule” for filmmaking. Of course there are videos where verticality is great, but these purposes are rare, as 90% of all viewing devices are horizontal. But yes, if you shoot one for a phone or an upright billboard, why not?

      • Yeah, ignore everything I wrote after “that was fun :D” …was in a strange mood that day.

      • No worries 🙂

  2. I am 100% with you! For as much control Apple likes to have on user experience, I’m surprised this was ever even an option on iOS. All Apple had to do was not make the screen auto-rotate while in video mode and the majority of these vertical videos wouldn’t exist.

great im gonna show this to my wife… I have even done the vertical TV demonstration for her and yet still we have vertical videos of our kids. its not fair cos one always gets left out!

  4. LMAO

It’s the other way around, actually. The screen does NOT auto-rotate when in camera mode. You just see the picture right way up because the lens in the phone rotates with the phone body.

So what camera manufacturers should do is to actually ROTATE the screen when in vertical, so the picture looks rotated 90º and forces the user to use a horizontal orientation 😉
